As You Like It is a beautiful
play, jam-packed full of romance and comedy, and featuring a host of
terrific characters.
The tale begins with poor Orlando, who's been orphaned and now is suffering under the thrall of his eldest
brother, Oliver, who only gives him husks to eat and generally treats
him with a complete lack of respect. Orlando decides to challenge the
great wrestler, Charles, and to everyone's surprise, whups him sound
upside his his head. This achievement has two consequences: one,
Rosalind, a beauteous young maiden falls in love with him, and, two, the
evil Duke gets right naffed off.
After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing,
Orlando and Rosalind separately - and by complete coincidence(!) - head
off for the Forest of Arden to look for the good old Duke who was
banished by the evil new Duke. That's just the start of it! Suffice it
to say, once everyone gets to the forest, there's the usual palaver -
mistaken identities, lovesick youths, comedy clowns and oafs, bizarre
songs and a fantastically unimaginably happy ending.
And we're going to perform it!
