Synopsis:

A witty and satirical tale of the Grenadiers' drive in early-1700's Shrewsbury to drum up - or more usually inveigle - volunteers into the service of Queen Anne. The officers' efforts are tireless and at times somewhat devious, but not to the extent that they are entirely distracted from amorous exploits in their own interests. The realism Farquhar sought was provided from his experience as a recruiting lieutenant in the Grenadiers in Shrewsbury, around 1704, so we can take it that he gives us an accurate and affectionately wry account of what went on!
